An unforgettable 28-day journey along Australia’s stunning northwest coast, from Darwin to Perth.
By Lisa Peltier
My boyfriend and I went on an unforgettable 28-day journey along Australia’s stunning northwest coast, from Darwin to Perth. This road trip was an exploration of both the vibrant natural beauty of Australia and the deep connection to Aboriginal culture that the region offers. Along the way, we encountered breathtaking landscapes, incredible wildlife, and a sense of adventure that stayed with us long after we returned home.
Days 1–5: Darwin to Broome
Our adventure began in Darwin, where we explored the Waterfront, the lush Botanic Gardens, and the serene Nightcliff Foreshore. Our highlight from Darwin was exploring the Mindil Beach Market where you can taste specialties from all over the world and enjoy the sunset on the beach.
After a restful night at a friend's house, we headed out to Katherine. We visited Katherine Hot Springs, and Edith Falls. We finished the day at Nitmiluk National Park, where we parked at sunset to see the sunlight reflected on the rocks.
Our next stop, Kununurra, was reached after a scenic 514 km drive. We enjoyed Lake Argyle's viewpoints and short walks from the caravan park. We stayed at the Lake Argyle Discovery Resort, soaking in the peaceful surroundings before starting our journey to Broome.
It’s a long drive, so we stopped at the Boab rest area halfway. In Broome we found an amazing scenic lookout, a great cafe, and a cute sunset picnic spot at Cable beach. Although the water here is magnificent, we recommend taking care when swimming as there are crocodiles and jellyfish.
After our picnic, we stayed the night at Tarangau Caravan Park.
Please note: Certain fruits and vegetables are prohibited when crossing the border between NT and WA. It’s also important to fuel up regularly as there may be no petrol for several hundred kilometers.
Days 6–10: Broome to Port Hedland
We explored Broome for a few days venturing out to Roebuck Bay and Gantheaume Point. Broome offered a wealth of coastal charm and natural beauty. The next night we stayed at Barn Hill Station and the quiet beach, which is accessible from the campsite, truly stole our hearts. During the tourist season, the campsite can fill up quickly, so we recommend booking well in advance.
The journey continued to Port Hedland, with a stop at Pretty Pools. We camped at Freecamp: Turf Club, the perfect place for people travelling with self-contained vehicles to rest after the long drive.
Days 11–19: Karijini National Park to Coral Bay
After a scenic drive to Karijini National Park, we immersed ourselves in the Fern Pool and Dales Gorge.
The next few days were filled with adventure on the road to Exmouth. One of our highlights was Mount Bruce summit trail at sunrise. Turquoise Bay, and Oyster Stacks were also amazing.
We stayed at the Ningaloo Caravan and Holiday Resort and later made our way to Coral Bay, where we were treated to dozens of reef sharks swimming side by side very close to the edge of the beach. They're easy to spot.

Days 16–20: Overlander Roadhouse to Shark Bay
The journey took us along some of Australia’s most remarkable roads, including stops the Quobba Blowholes and the Cactus Farm in Carnarvon. Shark Bay was another highlight, with stunning spots like Monkey Mia and Denham, where we explored Eagle Bluff Lookout and swam with sea life. We stayed at a Freecamp near Coral Bay and Overlander Roadhouse, both offering spectacular views and an opportunity to rest up before continuing.

Days 21–25: Kalbarri to Jurien Bay
From Kalbarri to Jurien we enjoyed the striking Nature’s Window, The Loop Trail, and the Kalbarri Skywalk. We recommend visiting Pink Lake in Port Gregory between 12pm and 2pm for the best colouration. We stayed at Anchorage Caravan Park.
In Jurien Bay for an unforgettable experience swimming with Sealions. Pinnacles Desert was another stop on our itinerary, where the unique landscape and Hangover Bay offered a chance for a scenic picnic. Here we stayed at Tuarts Reserve.
Days 26–28: Yanchep and Perth
Our final days took us to Yanchep National Park, where we tried sandboarding at the Lancelin Sand Dunes and visited the Koala Boardwalk. A quick drive to Perth brought us to attractions like London Court, St Mary’s Cathedral, and the Kings Park Botanic Gardens. A visit to Rottnest Island was an absolute highlight.
After 28 days on the road, we ended our journey at the Discovery Holiday Park in Perth, feeling fulfilled and reconnected with the beauty of this incredible country.
