The island state of Tasmania lies 240 kilometres (150 miles) south of the Australian mainland, encompassing the 64,519 square kilometre main island, and the surrounding 1000 islands. While it may be Australia's least populous state, Tasmania has more than enough history, culture and serenity to go around. Hiring a motorhome in Hobart is the perfect option to get the most out of the region.
Here are our tips for making the most out of your Hobart road trip.
Hobart and surrounding areas
Once you have picked up your motorhome rental, Hobart awaits.
Australia's second-oldest city is packed with culture. Wander through the sprawling Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens or enjoy a 15-minute ferry ride to visit MONA, the underground Museum of Old and New Art, a $110m private collection of art and antiquities famous in global art circles.
No Saturday in Hobart is complete without tasting your way through the dynamic culinary scene of Salamanca Market. Established over 50 years ago, this riverside market is home to an incredible 300 stalls offering local gins, whiskeys and food alongside buskers and artisans.
Take in the views of this vibrant colonial city on foot or from the River Derwent, and with bikes available for hire, Hobart is easy to explore. Adventurous souls can find a different perspective exploring mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, rock climbing, abseiling and surfing which can all be found within a 20km circle of the city.
Port Arthur
When you are ready to depart Hobart and begin your Tasmania road trip, Port Arthur is an absolute must-do. An easy 90-minute drive from Hobart, Tasmania’s most famous convict settlement offers some of the best sightseeing on the East Coast. Explore more than 30 pale stone buildings and ruins that rise from landscaped grounds and shady woods, recording the rich history of this Tasman Peninsula site.
Dive deeper into Port Arthur's history with historical tours around the Isle of the Dead or hear tales of the extreme lengths convicts went to when trying to escape. If you enjoy a spine-tingling experience, after-dark tours offer the opportunity to search for Port Arthur’s ghosts.
Before you leave Port Arthur, descend the 115 steps to the Remarkable Tunnel. A lookout platform at the foot of sandstone cliffs gives you a view through the darkness into the Southern Ocean.
There are several caravan parks and campsites nearby, with excellent campsite facilities.
The East Coast
A fantastic way to explore Tasmania is a road trip along The Great Eastern Drive, 220 kilometres of deep blue waters, rainforests and iconic national parks.
Visit Freycinet National Park for a plethora of dramatic pink granite peaks, idyllic beaches and walking trails. Soak up the natural beauty of Wineglass Bay, spectacularly framed by The Hazards - the most photographed place in Tasmania.
Your motorhome holiday wouldn't be complete without seeing some famous Tasmanian devils. East Coast Nature World is 150 acres of native coastal bushland and a lagoon sanctuary, where a wide variety of Tasmania's unique wildlife roams freely. You can wander at your own leisure or experience a Tasmanian Devil feeding presentation or various wildlife encounters.
The West Coast
The West Coast offers its own highlights, and the opportunity to explore Tasmania through a Western Wilds road trip.
